Travel Vaccinations
Information and advice for travelling abroad
Travel vaccinations
Before you travel it’s important to check if you will need any vaccinations for the country you’re visiting. Some vaccinations are not effective immediately or require a series of appointments so it is important that you start the process at least 2 months before you travel to ensure that you receive your vaccinations in time and that they are effective.
Please check here to see if you are likely to need vaccinations and for travel health advice:
You should complete a separate form for each person travelling.
If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel, please complete our online travel form.
We will review the form and a Practice Nurse will contact you within 10 days to advise the next step. This will initially be a telephone call to discuss your travel risk and a second, in-person, appointment will be confirmed if vaccinations are needed.
Unlike community pharmacies or private clinics, we are able to offer a free Travel Clinic consultation with our Practice Nurses as well as free routine travel vaccinations through the NHS. These include:
- Hep A
- Typhoid
- Diphtheria / Tetanus / Polio combined
Some other vaccinations are not covered by the NHS and, as private treatments, they incur a cost. These include:
- Yellow Fever
- Hep B
- Japanese Encephalitis
- Malaria
Vaccinations have a shelf life and so we do not keep supplies of all vaccinations in the surgery and they may need to be ordered, and so where the cost is not covered by the NHS, payment will be required in advance.
Additional medication for travel
If you need medication for a long-term health condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, you may be able to get an extra supply of medication to cover time away.
If you intend to be abroad for 3 months or more, you are not entitled to NHS prescriptions or any other NHS services, so we can only supply a sufficient and reasonable quantity for you to reach your destination and register with a local doctor (usually 2 to 4 weeks medication).
If your period of travel is for under 3 months then we may be able to supply medication for the whole of your trip, but this will depend on the nature of the medication, so for example those that require monitoring may not be prescribed.
