Breast Screening

Breast screening (commonly known as a mammogram) is a screening test which uses X-rays to look for cancers that are too small to see or feel. Breast screening is done by female health specialists called mammographers.

Anyone registered with a GP as female will be invited for NHS breast screening every three years between the ages of 50 and 71. You will get a letter in the post inviting you. If you have not been invited for a breast screening by the time you are 53, please contact your local breast screening service. In Oxfordshire the number is 01865 235621.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and the chance of getting breast cancer increases as you get older. Most breast cancers are diagnosed in women over 50 which is why regular breast screening is one of the best ways to spot it and breast screening saves around 1,300 lives each year in the UK.

Breast screening can be carried out whatever the shape or size of your breasts. As well as going for regular screening checks, it is important you know how breasts normally look and feel. If you notice any changes in your breasts that are not normal for you, contact us as soon as possible.
